Day 12 - Around the World: Ethiopia Ganna

Ethiopians celebrate Ganna on January 7 with fasting, white clothing, church services, and joyful meals. It emphasises purity, worship, and remembering Christ’s humble birth.

Day 11 - Devotional: Peace That Interrupts Fear

The angels’ first words to the shepherds were 'Do not be afraid'. Before God gives instruction, He gives peace. Christmas is a reminder that His peace arrives before clarity.

Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. -  Luke 2:10 (NIV)

POEM: Christmas Bells

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 1807 – 1882

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
    And wild and sweet
    The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
    Had rolled along
    The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
    A voice, a chime,
    A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
    And with the sound
    The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
    And made forlorn
    The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
    “For hate is strong,
    And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
    The Wrong shall fail,
    The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

Day 10 -  Prophecy: Virgin Birth

Isaiah spoke of a virgin giving birth — something humanly impossible. It reminds you that God keeps His promises in supernatural ways that exceed human logic.

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. - Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)

Day 9 -  Did You Know: First Nativity

Saint Francis of Assisi created the first live nativity scene in 1223 to help people visualise Jesus' birth. It spread across Europe and became a key Christmas tradition.

Day 8 - Around the World: Philippines Lantern Festival

The Philippines hosts the Giant Lantern Festival, symbolising the star that guided the wise men. It reflects how the light of Christ reaches nations and cultures in unique ways.

Day 7 -  Devotional: The Waiting Season

Advent teaches patience. God often works behind the scenes. Silence is not absence; delay is not denial. You can trust Him in the in-between because He is shaping something good.

Day 6 -  Prophecy

Day 6

Micah foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem — a small, unlikely town. This fulfilled prophecy shows that God uses humble places to birth great purpose.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.” - Micah 5:2 (NIV)

The name Emmanuel/Immanuel means 'God with us'. Christmas celebrates the moment God entered humanity, not from a distance but intimately. He came into your world, your struggles, your reality.

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). - Matthew 1:23 (NIV)

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." - John 1:14 (NIV)

The German Advent wreath holds four candles, one for each week of Advent. Each candle represents growing hope, peace, joy, and love. The gradual lighting reflects how Christ, the Light of the World, brightens every darkness.

Day 3 - Prophecy

advent day 3

Isaiah prophesied a Child who would carry peace, wisdom, and government upon His shoulders. This prophecy points directly to Jesus, showing that His coming was intentional and long-awaited.

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

The Advent calendar tradition started in Germany where families marked the days to Christmas with chalk lines. Over time it evolved into decorated cards, candles, and now digital versions. The heart behind it remains the same: to build anticipation for the arrival of Christ.

Day 1 - What is Advent?

Advent Day 1

Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year and is a season of expectation and preparation. It reminds you that God stepped into human history at the perfect time. Advent teaches waiting with hope, because Christ came once and will come again.

The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned. - Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

What should I expect when I visit the church?

You will receive a very warm welcome particularly from our Welcome Team who will be able to answer your questions and direct you to where you need to go.  We normally give notices after opening the Celebration Service with joyous praise songs.

Main Auditorium 3

There will be approximately 30 mins of singing in total with opportunity for church members to pray or read a passage from the bible or share a prophecy etc. After the singing there will be a preach from one of the  Pastoral Team (or sometimes a guest speaker) with an opportunity to respond at the end of the service.

You'll find a variety of ministries to serve you and/or your family - from the comfort and security of our dynamic and exciting ministry for children, through to the main service for adults. SCC is a place where the whole family can experience God and spiritual growth.

We want you to know that wherever you are on your spiritual journey, whether you're just beginning to take a look at Christianity or you already have a mature relationship with Jesus, we're here to help you take the next step spiritually and to offer you a place where you can get involved as much as you can and grow in your walk with God. Church is an inspirational place where you can meet with God.

Refreshments are served after the service where there is plenty of time to meet new people and ask more questions.

What happens to the kids at church?

We have a fantastic programme for the kids at the Church for ages 0–11ish. Children stay with their parents at the start of the service as we worship (sing songs!) together for the first part of the morning. An announcement will show up on the screens to let you know when the children need to go to their church in a separate room downstairs.

The Children's church team will assist you with registering your children (if it's your first time) and show you where you collect them from after the Celebration Service.
Our children’s teachers have been CRB checked and are passionate about children.

We strive to create a safe and exciting environment for children to learn, develop and grow in their spiritual lives.

For more information about what happens in the children's work please feel free to contact us.

Is there a dress code?

No! Please just be yourself and come dressed in your 'normal' clothes.

Will I have to join in?

Not at all!

You are free to simply observe or participate as much as feels comfortable for you.

I have more questions, how can I get in touch and ask them.

Please feel free to contact us.
